Monteverde Cloud Forest Costa Rica

Monteverde Cloud Forest, Costa Rica – Hanging Bridges, Wildlife & Night Safari Guide

Some places amaze you from the very first moment, while others stay mysterious even after several days of exploring. The Monteverde Cloud Forest belongs to the second category. Mist drifting between the trees, constant humidity, the sounds of unseen birds, endless shades of green and lush vegetation all create the feeling of stepping into a completely different world.

Located on the slopes of the Cordillera de Tilarán, Monteverde is best known for its cloud forests, one of the rarest ecosystems on Earth. Cloud forests make up only around 1% of all forests worldwide. In this place, you can encounter hundreds of bird species, exotic plants, sloths, monkeys, and—if you are lucky—the legendary resplendent quetzal.

What is the Monteverde Cloud Forest?

Monteverde is not just one reserve, but an entire region comprising small towns, eco-farms, and protected natural areas. The most famous of them is the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve (Reserva Biológica Bosque Nuboso Monteverde).

The history of the reserve dates back to 1972, when a group of Quaker settlers and environmentalists purchased the first areas of forest to protect them from deforestation and expanding settlement. Today, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve covers more than 10,500 hectares of protected land and is one of the most important cloud-forest conservation areas in Costa Rica.

Around 13 kilometres of marked trails run through the most scenic parts of the forest. Given the fragile ecosystem, it is best to arrive early in the morning, when there are fewer visitors and the chance of spotting wildlife is highest.

Wildlife of Monteverde Cloud Forest

As a result, Monteverde is a true paradise for nature lovers. More than 400 bird species have been recorded in the area.

The star of the region is the resplendent quetzal—one of the most beautiful birds in Central America. The best time to spot it is during the breeding season, from March to April. Another iconic species is the three-wattled bellbird, whose call sounds like a metallic ringing bell.

The forest is also home to howler monkeys, capuchins, coatis, sloths, agoutis, squirrels, and numerous species of amphibians and reptiles. Because of the dense vegetation, spotting mammals is not always easy, and animals usually avoid the most popular trails.

Hanging bridges in Selvatura Park

One of the most popular attractions in Monteverde Cloud Forest, without a doubt, is the Selvatura Park hanging bridges. The trail takes you high above the forest floor, offering a completely different perspective of the cloud forest.

The walk follows a system of suspension bridges stretching between the treetops. I guarantee you will see spectacular views there, especially when the mist slowly moves between the giant trees.

During our visit, the weather was far from perfect—it rained heavily the entire time. Wildlife stayed hidden deep in the forest, and we only managed to spot one monkey running through the branches.

Still, it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences in Monteverde. Even without animals, walking among the treetops gives you a real sense of the scale and beauty of this unique ecosystem.

Selvatura Park also offers zip lines, a canopy adventure park, a hummingbird garden, a butterfly garden, and exhibitions of amphibians and reptiles.

  • Hanging bridges entrance fee: 45–55 USD per person.

Sloth Sanctuary

Sloth Sanctuary, Costa Rica

One of the additional paid attractions at Selvatura Park is the sloth sanctuary. The visit is led by a local guide who explains the biology of these fascinating animals and ongoing conservation efforts.

Before entering the sanctuary, we learned that only six species of sloths exist worldwide. Interestingly, scientists are moving away from describing them simply as “lazy” animals. Today, they are more often seen as calm, cautious, and perfectly adapted to life high in the tree canopy. After watching them for a while, it is hard not to agree with this description.

During our visit, we observed 12 sloths, including females and young individuals. The tour lasted around 40 minutes and was very interesting.

Night safari – the biggest surprise of Monteverde Cloud Forest

Night safari – the biggest surprise of Monteverde Cloud Forest
Grasshopper

Exploring the forest during the day is fascinating, but the real life of the jungle begins after dark.

Before coming to Costa Rica, I was convinced that I would never go into the jungle at night. In my imagination, snakes, tarantulas, and scorpions were everywhere. In the end, I agreed to join a night safari—and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of the entire trip.

The two-hour walk took place in a small group, guided by a local guide equipped with professional flashlights and scopes.

I have to admit that the beginning of the tour was not exactly relaxing. Walking right behind the guide, I kept shining my flashlight on the ground, convinced that every step might bring a dangerous encounter with a hidden snake. After a while, I even asked the guide whether we should stomp to scare them away from the path.

He smiled and said:

– There is no need. Our snakes live in trees, not on the ground.

On the one hand, I felt relieved and finally stopped staring at my feet. On the other hand, it quickly occurred to me that I would probably not notice a snake falling from a branch either. For safety, I pulled my hood over my head and continued walking through the dark forest, trying not to look too much above me.

During the tour, we managed to spot, among others, toucans, sloths, a Mexican porcupine, scorpions, tarantulas, colourful frogs, a stick insect resembling a leaf, spiders, lizards, capuchin monkeys, and huge ant colonies. Not all of them were easy to photograph, as they moved faster than the camera shutter could capture.

To my relief, we did not encounter any snakes, though I regret not seeing them in their natural environment today.

If you are wondering whether a night safari is worth it, my answer is definitely yes.

  • Night safari price:  40 USD per person.
