The island is significantly larger than its neighbours, Capri and Procida. It is nearly impossible to see all its corners in just one day. From picturesque beaches and hot springs to majestic castles and quaint vineyards, there is plenty to choose from. To truly experience the magic of Ischia and discover its many attractions, it is worth staying for at least one or two nights. This will give you time to explore the island at a relaxed pace, enjoy the local cuisine, and soak in the relaxing atmosphere that Ischia is famous for.
In 2002, Pope John Paul II visited the island. During this one-day visit, 20,000 people attended the meeting with the Pope. An altar was built on the square leading to the bridge to the Aragonese Castle. Today, this square is named after John Paul II, and a commemorative plaque has been placed on the wall of one of the surrounding buildings.
When to visit the island of Ischia?
- High Season (June – August). This is the best time to visit and enjoy the beaches and thermal baths. The weather is perfect for lounging on the beach, and the island is full of life.
- Low Season (April-May and September-October). There are fewer tourists, but the weather is still pleasant. This is ideal for quieter sightseeing, walking, and enjoying the thermal baths.
- Off-Season (November – March). The island is almost empty. The weather is still good, although more rainy and windy days exist. The thermal baths are closed, but you can visit the castle and the botanical garden. You can also take a drive around the island. During this period, ferries run less frequently or may be cancelled due to bad weather, so it is a good idea to check this before your trip.
The island of Ischia – One-Day Itinerary
Morning:
Ferry from Naples to Ischia
The ferry ride from Naples to Ischia takes about 1-1.5 hours, depending on the type of ferry (fast ferry or traditional ferry). It is best to depart early in the morning to make the most of your day on the island.
Tickets can be purchased online, for example, on the 12Go* website, with prices starting at 16 euros one way.
Take an early ferry, around 8:00 AM, to reach the island by about 9:30 AM. Purchase your tickets online or directly at the port. While waiting for the ferry, you can grab a coffee or have breakfast at nearby shops. The waiting area is outdoors, with plenty of seating. Each ferry has an assigned berth number, where you should wait for the staff to guide you onto the ship.
As the ferry departs, head to the back of the ship to catch Naples’s view from the sea. The sight is breathtaking! You can see the port, massive cruise ships, military barracks, the rear of Castel Nuovo, and the towering Castel Sant’Elmo above the city.
The ferry also passes close by the lighthouse and the statue of Saint Januarius, the patron saint of Naples, which are not easily visible from land.
Lighthouse at Cape Miseno
On the way, you will pass the lighthouse at Cape Miseno (Faro di Capo Miseno). Perched atop a cliff, this lighthouse aids navigation in the area, guiding ships entering the port of Naples. It was built in 1867 and renovated in 1953. Today, it is fully automated, powered by a solar unit.
The lighthouse is an important landmark, visible from about 30 km away. The surrounding area offers stunning views of the bay and the island of Ischia.
Arrival at Ischia Port
Explore the port with a short walk, where you can see ferries, cruise ships, sailboats, and yachts. Start your day with a cup of Italian coffee at one of the waterfront cafés.
I especially recommend Calise Espresso Café at Via Antonio Sogliuzzo 89, Ischia. The café is set in a beautiful garden, with plenty of seating inside and outside.
Good to know. Coffee enjoyed inside the café at a table is almost half the price compared to coffee taken outside to the garden tables.
Aragonese Castle
Castello Aragonese captivates visitors with its history, architecture, and breathtaking views. Built on a rocky islet connected to the main island by a bridge, the castle takes you on a journey back in time, dating as far back as 474 BC. The structure we see today was constructed in the 15th century.
During your visit, be sure to explore the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The church features stunning frescoes, and the former Clarisse nunnery, where you will find a haunting crypt. The gardens are spread across different levels of the castle. They are filled with Mediterranean vegetation and offer magical views of the bay and Mount Vesuvius.
Do not miss the historical printing press, which preserves traces of the castle’s literary culture. An intriguing spot is the Torture Chamber, where you will discover the dark secrets of the old Inquisition. The castle holds many mysteries, each telling a fascinating story. End your visit with an espresso on the terrace, enjoying the unparalleled view of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Time needed for the visit: plan for about 1 to 1.5 hours. It is best to visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and (in the high season) the heat.
Practical information
Admission: €12 (2024 price). The castle is open to visitors daily, year-round, from 9:00 AM until sunset. During the winter, tickets are cheaper at €10, but some paths are closed. Winter visits are restricted to safe areas, with no risk of slipping on icy steps.
Upon purchasing your ticket, you will receive a leaflet outlining all the castle’s attractions and a designated walking route.
Stroll through Ischia Ponte
Explore this charming neighbourhood with its narrow streets, local shops, and restaurants.
You’ll find plenty of interesting spots, beautiful views, churches, and walls adorned with ceramic tiles. Look out for intriguing statues of saints and scholars, as well as contemporary art. Allow about 30 minutes for this walk.
Lunch at a local trattoria
Try local specialities such as rabbit Ischian style (coniglio all’ischitana) or fresh seafood.

Off-Season: stroll through La Mortella Gardens
Giardini La Mortella is a stunning botanical garden established in the 1950s by composer William Walton and his wife Susana Walton. Open to the public since 1991, the garden remains privately owned. Here, you will find exotic plants and breathtaking views.
Allocate about 1.5 to 2 hours for your visit. Admission is approximately 12 Euros as of 2024. The gardens are open from March 30 to November 3, but only on select days. They are closed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Visiting hours are from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with the last entry at 4:00 PM.

Return to Ischia Port
Catch the return ferry to Naples. In high season the last ferry leaves at around 7:00 PM, and in low season around 4:00 PM. Make sure you leave enough time to get back to the ferry without rushing.

Sightseeing Routes and Distances
- Ischia Port – Aragonese Castle. Approximately 2.5 km, 30 minutes on foot, or a short taxi ride (5-10 minutes). You can also take bus number 7 (approx. 15 minutes).
- Ischia Port – Poseidon Thermal Gardens. Approximately 14 km, 15-20 minutes by taxi or bus, line 2.
- Ischia Port – Negombo Thermal Gardens. Approximately 8 km, 10-12 minutes by taxi or bus, line CS (Circolare Sinistra, literally “Left Circular”).
- Ischia Port – La Mortella Gardens. Approximately 10 km, 12-15 minutes by taxi or bus, line CS (Circolare Sinistra, literally “Left Circular”).
Getting Around the island of Ischia by Bus
Ischia has a public bus system that runs frequently, with buses arriving every 15-20 minutes on average. Tickets can be purchased at Tabacchi (tobacco shops), small shops, bars, and in some hotels. You can also buy tickets directly on the bus, but they cost slightly more. You can also purchase 3-day, weekly, or monthly passes.
How to find the bus stop after disembarking from the ferry?
Once you exit the ferry, head left (toward the island) and follow the road uphill. Just after a short incline, on the right side, there is a small bus loop where buses depart to various locations on the island.
Bus ticket prices (as of 2024):
- A single ride costs approximately 1.5 euros, however, tickets bought directly from the driver are more expensive (2 euros).
- You can also purchase a 100-minute ticket for around 1.8 euros.
- A day pass costs approximately 4.5 euros, a weekend pass around 15.50 euros, and a monthly pass about 33.60 euros.
- Drivers only sell single-ride tickets.
Bus stops are not well-marked, and stops are not displayed or announced on the buses. If you are not travelling to the end of the route, ask the driver to inform you when your stop is approaching.
