What is the Electronic Travel Authorization for the UK?
The ETA – Electronic Travel Authorization for the UK is a travel permit required for citizens of visa-free countries, including those from the European Union, who plan to enter the United Kingdom for tourism, business, or transit purposes. This system aims to enhance border control and ensure greater security.
When does the UK ETA come into effect, and who needs it?
From April 2, 2025, all travellers from European Union countries will need a valid ETA to enter the United Kingdom. This requirement applies to all travellers, including children and infants.
How and when do I apply for an ETA?
The application process for European citizens will be available from March 5, 2025. The easiest way to apply is through the official “UK ETA” mobile app, available on Google Play and the Apple App Store. Alternatively, travellers can apply online Gov.UK – apply for an electronic travel authorisation eta.
However, the fastest way to apply is using the UK ETA app.
To complete the Electronic Travel Authorization application, you will need:
- A valid passport that you will use for travel.
- Active Email account access.
- A payment method (e.g., debit/credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay).
As part of the application, you will be required to upload a scan of your passport and a recent facial photo. It is recommended to apply at least three working days before your planned trip, although most decisions are processed much faster.
How much is the ETA cost, and how long is it valid?
The UK ETA costs £10. It is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During this period, the ETA allows multiple entries into the UK, with each stay limited to a maximum of six months.

Additional Information for Travelers

- Passport changes: If you renew or change your passport while your ETA is still valid, you must apply for a new authorization, as the ETA is linked to a specific passport.
- Dual citizenship: Travelers with dual British and EU citizenship should use their British passports, as this exempts them from the ETA requirement.
- Travel via Ireland: Residents of the Republic of Ireland are exempt from the ETA requirement when traveling to the UK. There are no planned border checks between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)
The European Union is introducing its travel authorization system, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This will require visa-exempt non-EU travellers to obtain authorization before visiting the Schengen Area.
ETIAS was initially planned for 2024, but the latest updates indicate that the system will launch in May 2025.
As a result, UK citizens planning to travel to the European Union will need to obtain ETIAS once the system is implemented. The ETIAS fee will be €7, and the authorization will be valid for three years.

The European Union has again postponed the launch of ETIAS (EU Travel Information & Authorisation System). Initially planned for 2020 and delayed multiple times, the system is now expected to go live in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Once ETIAS is in place, travellers from visa-exempt countries must apply for authorization online before visiting Europe. Given that over 37 million people travel to Europe each year, this new requirement is likely to have a significant impact on global travel plans.
